What to Expect
Therapy sessions at Richardson Therapy are a conversation. Through conversation, you’ll have the chance to speak freely about whatever’s on your mind. No need to filter yourself here.
One of the joys of therapy is that you don’t have to have a plan. It’s okay if you’re not sure where to start, or what to say. That’s where your therapist comes in.
As therapists, we listen carefully for where to start exploring. Your therapist will ask questions to help you reach a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences. Your therapist can also offer a compassionate outside perspective and point out themes and patterns that they notice in what you share.
Some people like to play with fidget toys or draw during therapy. Some people like getting “therapy homework” between sessions and some don’t. Some people bring notes about what to talk about and some people prefer to improvise. All of these are good ways of doing therapy!
Starting therapy can be nerve-wracking if it’s new or if you’ve had a bad experience with therapy in the past. If you’re comfortable, talking about nerves is very helpful in the therapeutic process. It helps your therapist better tailor your sessions to you.
Therapy can be many things. It can be a space to get stuff off your chest. To grieve. To heal. To reflect. To wrestle with hard decisions. To rest. To rekindle hope. To find momentum. To find connection. To discover more of yourself.
Seeking therapy is a sign of courage.
